Time & Location

Jun 06, 2026, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Jamberoo Youth Hall, Allowrie St, Jamberoo NSW 2533, Australia

About the event

Using the leaves of the native cabbage tree palm (Livistona australis), found only along Australia’s eastern seaboard, you will learn the traditional skills required to create your own beautifully hand-woven hat.

The workshop is held over two Saturdays (6 & 27 June 2026), which allows time between sessions for you to continue making the plaited material you learn on Day 1.

When you return on Day 2, Sue will guide you step-by-step in shaping and assembling your work into a completely unique cabbage tree palm hat to take home.

Alongside practical making skills, you will gain fascinating insights into the history of colonial settlement Australia, when cabbage tree hats were a vital cottage industry — with the Illawarra, and Jamberoo in particular, at its heart.

Venue: Jamberoo Youth Hall

Time: 10am – 4pm each day
