About the event
What
- In this new workshop you can choose from making a lampshade with either a regular white lining, OR a lined shade with a fabric on the interior as well as exterior. Both shade types are made from scratch, using trade-quality materials and using modern lampshade-making techniques
- By using your own fabric the result is not only unique but perfectly suited to your personal decor style - students are always thrilled with their results!
- If you're not sure which type shade to choose, it's recommended to start with the unlined option - because it's simpler. You'll learn the lined method by observation, and can take a lined shade kit to make at home if you wish
Where
- This workshop is located in the HOBBYSEW store in Figtree Grove Shopping Centre close to the heart of Wollongong.
- Parking and store access is easy, as the store opens directly onto the roof carpark - parking is available literally at the door.
When
- 9.30am - 1.00pm
Difficulty
- No prior knowledge, or skills are required for this workshop
- Your teacher Kate will take you step by step through the process - shade-making is certainly fiddly but Kate loves teaching and strives to make each workshop as enjoyable as possible and, of course you'll be in a group of like-minded makers!
- Minimum age is 16 years
- Physical dexterity is required in the form of using scissors and other tools
What's included
- All the supplies you'll need are included (except fabric*).. this includes professional quality adhesive backings, frames, and tools
- Notes summarising what you learnt in the workshop, including a list of resources for future shade-making
- Morning tea with home-made goodies
What to bring
- BYO fabric* (see below)
- A pair of sharp fabric scissors if you have them, but no worries if you don't (we have spares)
- If you have a pair of tight stretchy gardening gloves bring them (but not necessary to buy specially)
Shade Options
- In this workshop you'll be making a DRUM shaped lampshade (ie: it has straight sides) with a white lining*
- There is a choice of sizes available from small to large - you'll see these in the checkout process
- If you need help picking the right size lampshade for your project check out our Size Guide
- *In addition to the regular white lined shades you can also choose the lined shade option at checkout. Lined shades are not more difficult than regular - they just take one extra step and make the process slightly more complicated. You'll need to bring 2 pieces of fabric, one for the inner and one for the outer
Fabric
- QTY Because the amount of fabric is dependent on the size of shade you choose, the quantity you need to bring will be advised in the detailed information sheet sent following your booking. Generally this will be no more than half a metre of either 110cm wide or 140cm wide fabric for regular shades (or x 2 pieces for lined shades)
- BEST FABRIC TYPES are natural fibres (cotton or linen) such as Quilting fabrics or cotton-poly mixes
- DO NOT BRING furnishing or upholstery weight; silky; stretchy; canvas; sheer or fabrics which fray easily (these are very difficult to work with esp. for beginners)
- PREPARATION your fabric must be cut to specified size and perfectly crease-free (ironed) before class
- All fabric details will be sent on the Info Sheet following booking
What else
- Kits will be available to purchase so you can turn your lampshade into a pair, or make a different size or type when you get home
